May 14, 2017 - The Joy of Easter and the Cost of Discipleship

Scripture Focus: The story of the first martyr, Stephen; Jesus's farwell discourse to his disciples.

"Today’s readings remind us that part of the meaning of Christ’s resurrection is that we are raised up to be the Body of Christ...if we are the Body of Christ, then we are a crucified body."

March 26, 2017 - The Lord has been/is/will be My Shepherd

Scripture Focus: God sends the prophet Samuel to anoint a new king of Israel; Psalm 23

"Remind yourself of who God is, and then in prayer practice trusting God, even in the times it feels hard to do so. Maybe through that practice, you will come to see the goodness of God even in those hard times."

March 12, 2017 - To See the Kingdom of God

Scripture Focus: Jesus tells Nicodemus that no one can see the kingdom of God unless they are born from above; no one can enter the kingdom of God unless they are born of water and Spirit.

"We can’t see the kingdom as it already is around or as its time of fullness is drawing near without being born anew. Maybe that’s because we can’t automatically see the world as it really is, as God sees it...there is something in us and around us that keeps us from seeing as God sees."

March 1, 2017 - Ash Wednesday - The Story God Tells About Us

Scripture Focus: Isaiah and Jesus tell the people to be genuine in their piety and their good works.

"On Ash Wednesday we hear the story of who God says we are. We hear that we are vulnerable and sinful. Then we hear that God loves us as we are. And, finally, we hear that God does not leave us as we are."

"...in moments when our hearts or lives feel dried-up or empty or brittle or small, we come to God hoping for that divine touch to help keep the life alive in us, to fill us up, to make us stronger."

February 12, 2017 - Law and Gospel

Scripture Focus: Jesus "lays down the law"

"The convicting words of the law that make us squirm are as much a part of God’s work of salvation as are the comforting words of the gospel."

January 22, 2017 - United in Christ, Bound to the Gospel

Scripture Focus: Paul tells the church in Corinth that they must not be divided; they are one in Christ.

"It’s not just about getting along; it’s about holding one another accountable to the gospel. It’s about continuing the work of Christ in our time and place."

January 15, 2017 - Come and See

Scripture Focus: John the Baptist points people to Jesus: Andrew, Peter, and others begin to follow Jesus.

“'Come and see' is an invitation to experience God’s presence in our lives, to see God in the new questions that come up as we grow, to see God in new ways as our understanding of the world changes. It is an invitation to relationship with a God who is just as complex as our world and our questions."

January 1, 2017 - Love Became a Refugee

Scripture Focus: Joseph, Mary, and Jesus flee to Egypt.

"...what we see in Matthew’s Gospel is that love incarnate, the baby Jesus, thrown immediately into some of the hardest of human experiences...There is nowhere we can go where God will not be. There is nothing we will go through that God won’t go through with us."

December 4, 2016 - Preparing the Way for God's Changes

Scripture Focus: John the Baptist preaches repentance at the Jordan River: "Prepare the way of the Lord!"

"Intentionally practicing curiosity is like keeping the door open for God to come into our lives and make some changes. It’s a way to 'prepare the way of the Lord' whom we can never quite predict – who is never-endingly working to make us into new creations."

November 20, 2016 - Making God Come Alive

Scripture Focus: Hanging on the cross, Jesus the King asks for forgiveness for his enemies and offers acceptance to a criminal.

"So when we say 'Christ is the King,' we are issuing a call to ourselves: Christ is our King, and we must live in a way that shows it. In the words of our baptismal promises: we must 'renounce the powers of this world that rebel against God.' We have to struggle against the ways of this world in order to make God known, to make God alive for others."
